The Reading High School Cross Country teams will host the 6th annual Frozen Knight 5K at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28.
The Frozen Knight 5K is open to the community, as well as district staff and students. This successful event serves as a major fundraiser for the school’s cross country teams, which have received increasing interest from students during the past several years, according to Head Coach Chris Yeshulas.
“The program is also growing a bit each year with the help of this event,” he says. “This past season we had our largest group of underclassmen come out and join the team. With the interest sparked by this race and word of mouth, it is looking like the program will have another large group of new runners next season. This is why the need to raise more funds to support the program is essential. We love rewarding our student athletes for their commitment to the program. One example of that is they receive a varsity letterman jacket their senior year if they participate in the program for four years.”
The race starts and finishes at Reading High School, located at 801 North 13th St. Number pickup will take place at the Main Cafeteria, located at the back of school. Signs will be available to direct race participants. Registration opens at 8:45 a.m., and the race begins at 10 a.m.
The race is wheel-measured course, mostly flat with short but memorable uphills and downhills in the first and last mile. Roads are not closed to traffic for race, however, car traffic is minimal.
The race will be timed by Pretzel City Sports and results will be posted on www.pretzelcitysports.com within in 1-2 days following the event. Awards will be presented in various categories.
Pre-registrants will receive a high-tech wicking T-shirt. Entry cost is $10 for Reading High School students and $23 for other runners prior to Feb. 14. After that date, and including the day of the race, cost is $28 while T-shirts last and $20 after T-shirts are no longer available.
Yeshulas is also seeking event sponsors, as well as community members and/or companies to sponsor individual RHS student runners for $10 each. In addition, Yeshulas is in need of door prizes and snacks. Community members and companies are also welcome to make a monetary donation directly to the program.
