Congratulations to RHS senior Philip Hernandez, who is featured in Lehigh University's "Early Acceptance Surprise" video. His reaction his priceless. Click here to watch the clip.
Congrats to the RHS Boys' Basketball team on winning the County Championship game against Berks Catholic on Feb. 13 at Santander Arena. We're so proud of you, and we couldn't be happier to have the title back at the Geigle. We're also proud of the unity our school district displayed last night. We've got a spirit that is often imitated, never duplicated! From our basketball players and their parents, our coaches, superintendent and board members, our cheerleaders, pep band and dance team, our super hype student section and, of course, our fans -- we showed everyone that we are truly One Vision ... All Students ... One Reading! Berks County is still buzzing about this amazing shot!
Watch Lonnie Walker's 70-footer during the final seconds of the 3rd quarter at Wednesday's semifinal county game: http://bit.ly/1zPKbih The hot begins around the 55-second mark. Special thanks to Andy Wlazewski and the Santander Arena for sharing the video with us. Mike Drago of the Reading Eagle described the shot this way: "The 6-4 Walker grabbed the rebound, dribbled out to the 3-point line above the key, then launched a running 70-footer that beat the third-quarter buzzer and stunned the Mustangs -- and just about everyone else in the big house." Walker is a sophomore at Reading High School in Reading, Pa. Kudos to Mr. Jay Mahoney, a rock star teacher at Millmont! His idea to have kids wear ties during the school day is having a huge impact on his classroom. Click here to read about the idea in today's Reading Eagle.
"I feel proud of myself. I feel like I get noticed," said Emmanuel Marrero, 8. "I feel like I am who I'm supposed to be." "When I put on my tie I feel like I bring respect to myself, like we're honoring our school," added Jasmyne Garcia, 9. Mr. Mahoney is in need of additional ties. If you're able to donate, please e-mail him at [email protected]. And special thanks to Reading Eagle reporter Dave Mekeel, who donated a bag of ties when he visited the school to interview Mr. Mahoney and his students. We appreciate your generosity! Congratulations to the RHS Freshman Boys Basketball Team, which was undefeated for the 2014-15 season with a 21-0 record! Good job, fellas.
Congratulations to RHS seniors Dontae Owens and Jaivon McMiller, who participated in National Letter of Intent Day on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2015. Dontae is the ONLY Berks County player to receive a scholarship from a Division I program. He plans to attend Rutgers University.
Jaivon plans to attend Cheyney University. Congrats to both of these outstanding student-athletes. Congratulations to Aaron Preston, who won Reading High School's annual Poetry Out Loud competition on January 22, 2015. Aaron, a senior, has won the competition the previous two years, as well. He will next compete in the regional competition. RHS has much success with this competition. Previously, both DeVonna Smith and Daphne McMaster won the Pennsylvania state competition and went on to compete in the national competition.
A very excited Daniela Garcia after seeing her artwork as a billboard. An RHS student, she won 2nd place in the Berks Arts Council's annual Fast Lane Art Contest. Congrats, Daniela!
