Tom Frey, a fifth-grade teacher at Amanda Stout Elementary School, received an honorable mention in Berks Encore's annual Senior Poetry Competition. The poems were judged by an independent panel, including people from the Reading Public Library and Berks Encore. This year, the organization received more than 90 entries. Mr. Frey attended the awards ceremony with students Julio Vega-Ortiz and Francisco Avila-Arana and their families.
my cherry tree
by tom frey
Hides its blossoms from winter's harsh indifference
I long and wait
Patience wards off despair
Until
Slowly, unnoticeably, each branch reawakes
Renewing hope
Giving beauty
But
Too short lived after such a long hibernation
Soon to fall and be carried off by a warm breeze
Landing white upon the waking earth
Mocking the winter's snow
I long and wait
Patience wards off despair
Until
Slowly, unnoticeably, each branch reawakes
Renewing hope
Giving beauty
But
Too short lived after such a long hibernation
Soon to fall and be carried off by a warm breeze
Landing white upon the waking earth
Mocking the winter's snow
